Homeland Security goes mad for the holiday season

E-mail Print PDF

ICE SeizedI'm surprised you found us. We remain one of the few sites still accessible within the United States following a recent and ongoing spate of seizure of domains by two U.S. government agencies. The Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) have shutdown a total of 82 sites. That figure is sure to rise over the coming days as both agencies work hard to ensure that sites they don't like don't contaminate the ordinary citizen with their filth.

E-mail Print PDF

As much as we poked fun at Google's innocence in thinking the Chinese would leave them alone the one good thing to come out of this story (Asides from exposing the Chinese two faced being-nice-while-hacking-every-commercial-company-going charade) is that China's attitude to the internet has been laid bare for all to see.

Google just doesn't get China. It never did. It entered the Chinese market in 2006 with a censored search engine. Doing so it angered many human rights activists by bowing to pressure from the Chinese government to censor sites and searches at the whim of the ruling Communist party. So much for the Google motto 'Do No Evil'. Apparently, Do No Evil does not extend to supporting access to information without it being censored.

AT&T logoDo No Evil. It's Google's corporate motto. But now Google has been accused of flaunting that principle with the accusation by  one of America's biggest telecommunication's companies that Google is breach the 4th principle of the FCC's Internet Policy Statement. The fourth principle calls on telecommunications companies to provide fair competition in  networks, applications, services, and content - i.e not to discriminate against users based on their location, choice of application and type of content accessed.

Wikipedia

Wikipedia -the free encyclopedia that anyone can edit. Thats what their slogan is. At some point in the future they're going to have to change it. I suggest something along the lines of 'WIkipedia - the free encyclopedia that anyone can edit - after admin approval.'
