Floppy DisksThe Floppy Disk has had it. Sony is to stop selling them from March, 2011 due to dwindling demand. Sony developed the 3.5 inch disk in 1981, replacing the larger 5.25 inch one that had been in use. But like everything technological, its time was marked.

The 'HD' format of the floppy could hold 1.44MB of data. In the mid nineties and at the turn of the century CD's began to become popular, capable of holding 650MB. The writing was on the wall when Apple dropped the floppy in 1998. Dell followed suit in 2003. Blu-ray and flash disks are currently battling it out with CD's for the storage option of choice.

Sony said it sold 12 million disks in Japan last year. The floppy disk will now join the ranks of other discontinued storage media -  LPs, cassettes, laser discs, reel-to-reel, 8-tracks, VHS, and Betamax.

The only question is when will CD's be added to this list?
