The key concept of Facebook's plan revolves around allowing external websites use data from facebook to create a web experience that it tailored to each user. It sounds grand in its scale or just plain creepy, if like me, you are paranoid over who knows what about you. How will it work? Externals sites, like CNN or Yelp or Slate will begin dropping 'plugins' on pages you visit. These plugins will display what your friends liked on those sites or what they thought of whatever your reading. When they visit, they will be able to see what you thought and what Dorothy did next. All the data will be stored on Facebook's reservoir. So when you visit the next site, that site will be able to see what type of music you like, what you eat, where you took your holidays, what items you purchased or placed on a wishlist. It can then use this data to personalise your visit, maybe showing you holiday snaps your friends took in the same place you took your vacation. The whole web become facebook concentric, almost like a spider with legs extending out to every site but ultimately, everyone dependent on facebook.
Google won't like that. Which means Microsoft will be running along shortly to buy facebook.
Facebook is offering a method that bypasses Google's search feature. Why search on Google for 'restaurants' when you have 100 top restaurants in your city as recommended by your very friends? Or why search on google for 'jeans' when your friends have recommended the highest quality jeans, or best value jeans on sites connected to facebook? All you have to do is pay with your facebook currency.
See the facebook blog on the future. The web is splitting into three camps. Those that spend most time on facebook, those that spend most time using search engines and those that use a proxy, plus a private browser to do their work - the true geeks of the net. I fall somewhere between the second and third camp. I don't want Google knowing my business and making money off my back. Nor do I want Facebook using my life to condense data to make money. Zuckerberg, you can stuff Facebook. I don't have an account, I will not be placing a 'plugin' on this page and I will not be hiving off customer data to facebook servers from any site I own. Go get screwed honey, this kid ain't for sale. |
